Experience and Enjoy Banbury

Recently I was invited to tour Banbury with the Banbury BID team and found it to be a very enjoyable and informative experience.

Banbury BID have launched a new website. experiencebanbury.co.uk as a means of communicating Banbury’s rich historical heritage and detailing the wide variety of experiences which await the visitor.

These range from a modern shopping vibe at Castle Quay to highly individual shops offering a unique shopping experience. Additionally, information on historical connections, culture and the arts, What’s On, visitor attractions, food and drink and indeed everything you would be wanting to discover in this friendly, vibrant town.

Banbury is becoming known as The Sunshine Town due to the symbol of the sun which is on the Coat of Arms and displayed on architecture throughout the town.

Tooley’s Boatyard has been in the heart of the town, on the South Oxford Canal since 1778. It has one of the oldest working inland waterway dry docks in the UK. Matt Armitage gave us a tour and recounted the history and outlined their future plans.

Next we went to Banbury Museum where Simon Townsend the director explained the importance of the exhibits and the role of manufacturing in Banbury through the ages.

Onto Ye Olde Reindeer Inn, Ian Thomas, the new landlord, explained the history of the building which opened in 1590. Whilst we sampled his new menu, we visited the Globe Room and learned of it’s association with many historical figures including Oliver Cromwell.

It was Friday and the Banbury Farmers Market stalls were laden with quality vegetables, meat, fish, cheeses as well as pies, bread, cakes, flowers and plants.

Castle Quay Waterfront and Lock 29 are being developed into a vibrant, exciting, shopping, entertainment and dining hub in a canal-side location which is sure to be a very popular destination and attract many visitors.

We completed our tour with a  visit to the grand St Mary’s Church and the majestic bronze statue of the Fine Lady Upon a White Horse at Banbury Cross which is known worldwide.

Having not visited Banbury in recent years I must confess that the day was a real education for me and showcased the wealth of experiences on offer with plenty to explore, see and do.

I thoroughly recommend that you treat yourself and your family to a fun day out exploring Banbury, The Sunshine Town, and discover these great experiences which are awaiting you on your doorstep.
