When we envisage Christmas, it often conjures images of long, dark nights, snowy days, cosy activities by the fireplace, and a heartwarming visit from Father Christmas himself. In Lapland, this enchanting holiday dream becomes a tangible reality.
Arctic Dreams in Finnish Lapland
Finnish Lapland, located within the Arctic Circle, is Scandinavia’s most easterly treasure. The region is nestled between Russia, Norway, and Sweden, and it’s no wonder that Finland is frequently celebrated as one of the happiest countries in the world. This is a land where nature’s beauty and cultural richness combine to create a unique Christmas experience.
A Land of Polar Contrasts
During the summer months, Lapland basks in the surreal phenomenon of the midnight sun, where the sun never sets, casting a perpetual glow over the landscape. In the colder seasons of spring, autumn, and winter, the night sky comes alive with the dancing colours of the Northern Lights, painting the heavens with hues of green, purple, and pink.
Santa’s Enchanted Home
As the year draws to a close, Lapland is transformed into a winter wonderland, with a thick blanket of snow covering the land. This snowy paradise becomes a magnet for people from all corners of the world who embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus himself. Here, children and adults alike have the unique opportunity to meet the beloved figure, share their Christmas wishes, and discover whether they’ve landed on the naughty or nice list.
Beyond Santa: Winter Adventures
But the Lapland experience is not limited to Santa. It’s a realm of winter adventures and outdoor activities that cater to all ages. Visitors can embark on thrilling reindeer sleigh rides, explore the pristine forests via dog-sled, trek through the snow with snowshoes, or zip across the snowy landscapes on snowmobiles. From day tours to extended two or three-night trips, there are options to suit every traveller’s preferences.
Extraordinary Accommodations
Accommodations in Lapland are equally extraordinary. Guests can choose to stay in cosy log cabins, traditional lodges, or for a truly unique experience, opt for accommodations like ice igloos or glass igloos that allow you to witness the magic of the Northern Lights from the warmth and comfort of your room.
The Magic of Christmas
The true magic of Christmas in Lapland is perhaps best reflected in the joy that lights up children’s faces when they come face to face with Father Christmas. It’s a place where the holiday spirit is palpable, and where the wonder of the season comes to life against a backdrop of snowy landscapes and the captivating display of the Northern Lights.
A Fairytale Come to Life
Lapland is not just a destination; it’s a fairytale come to life, where the enchantment of Christmas and the beauty of the Arctic blend seamlessly to create an unforgettable experience for all who visit this winter wonderland.
How to experience Lapland
There are lots of different ways to experience Lapland for yourself. In the run up to Christmas and the new year, join one of the many tours to the area. These range from a simple day trip to a 2, 3 or 4 night package. Allowing you opportunity to experience the winter activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling and meeting the reindeer. Then go in search of Santa before you have a private meeting. Not forgetting to keep looking up in search of the Northern Lights.
Outside of the Christmas and Santa experience there is still something for everyone to experience in this snowy wilderness. Between October and March there are many opportunities for viewing the Northern Lights. So choose to stay in a log cabin, ice hotel, glass igloo or a combination of all.
