Gardener’s Diary for May 24 Feature

As the sun climbs higher and the days stretch longer, May heralds a time of vibrant transformation in our gardens. I am eager to share the excitement and bounty that this splendid month brings. In Gardener’s Diary for May 24, we look at the month when our gardening dreams begin to blossom into reality, marking a period of eager anticipation for gardeners.

Planting and Protecting

Now is the time to dive into planting with gusto, but remember, those frost-tender bedding plants need a bit more time before they face the elements. And, while we’re at it, keeping an eye on watering during those deceivingly cold, dry spells is crucial. Our roses demand attention now, with regular sprays to fend off black spot and other unwelcome visitors. Greenfly, those persistent little critters, are likely to make their presence known, but fear not – a good combined pesticide should keep both pests and diseases at bay.

The alpine and rockery enthusiasts among us will be delighted by the dazzling display these plants are putting on. For those looking to enrich their herbaceous borders, our collection of container-grown beauties, including Herbaceous Geraniums, Hostas, and Iris, is sure to inspire. And let’s not forget our decorative grasses, bamboos, and ferns – perfect for adding texture and movement.

Trees, Shrubs, and Floral Hues

Our trees and shrubs are in their full glory, painting the landscape with their floral hues. Whether you’re after something for immediate impact or considering the charm of fruit trees for your garden, we’ve got you covered with an array of choices, including dwarf and patio varieties.

Vegetable growers, it’s your time to shine. Most seeds can now brave the outdoors, and for those looking for a head start, our young plants are ready for their new homes. And for the greenhouse enthusiasts, it’s time to get those tomatoes, cucumbers, and more into their summer residences, with a bit of fleece handy for those chilly nights.

Creating Portable Paradises

As for baskets and containers, the selection at Farnborough is brimming with potential. From Geraniums to trailing Petunias, we’ve got everything you need to create your own portable paradise. So, whether you’re in the market for something old or something new, Farnborough Garden Centre is the place to be this May. Our doors are open, and we can’t wait to share this season’s offerings with you. Drop by on the A423 Southam Road, near Banbury – we’re looking forward to helping you make this gardening season truly unforgettable.

We look forward to welcoming you soon and hope you enjoyed Gardener’s Diary for May 24, if you missed my April diary you can read this here.

Happy Gardening, Pete
