Alans Africa: Sponsored bike ride for Kono Town Primary School refurbishment project

3 September 2025
in Charity, Culture
Alans Africa Rotary year

The project is to replace the existing galvanised zinc roof and all the ceilings, totally re-paint the 3-classroom building, fit proper blackboards and have additional desk and bench sets made, as at the present time there is not enough classroom furniture for all 116 children. We are also going to replace and repair the basic water harvesting system on the building

I had planned to cycle 20 miles around Draycote Water, but have been suffering with a bad back for a couple of weeks so have temporarily postponed it, BUT hope to do it in the next couple of weeks. EVERY £ raised will go to the project and will “Make A Real Difference”. To date £790 has been raised via Just Giving and I have received a further £500 in “offline” donations. Thanks to all those who have already donated, greatly appreciated.

If you would like to donate, please visit the link below. THANKS for any support. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/alansafrica-konoprimary

The progress is very impressive, especially as they were unable to start any work until 24th July due to heavy rains. The old galvanised roof has been removed and replaced, we have put in several extra rows of breeze blocks on the veranda walls so access to the classrooms is not possible by breaking the ceilings on the veranda, all the ceilings have been replaced, new blackboards have been fitted, the building has been painted both internally and externally, new rainwater goods have been fitted and the 1,000 litre tank has been relocated to a better position. We just need to make the additional desk and bench sets and we are ready for the new term.

This was how the front aspect of the building looked 5 weeks ago.

The next 4 pictures show the progress at the school – “MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE”
