Gardener’s Diary for April

April is a key month for gardening, bringing vibrant growth and the awakening of the garden. Plants begin to sprout, foliage expands, and colourful blooms start to appear. Birdsong returns in full and bees become more active. However, April weather can still be unpredictable, so gardeners should remain cautious to avoid plant damage.

Monthly Gardening Tips for April

Watering Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs
Dry spells can occur even in cooler weather, so regularly water newly planted trees and shrubs to prevent them drying out and to support healthy establishment.

Roses
Start treatments against blackspot, including treating the soil beneath bushes. April is also the final opportunity to prune roses for healthy growth.

Summer Bulbs and Tubers
There is still time to plant summer-flowering bulbs and tubers. Farnborough Garden Centre offers a wide selection for a colourful summer display.

Alpine and Herbaceous Plants
Now is a good time to plant new borders or enhance existing ones with alpines and herbaceous plants, whether for rockeries or beds.

Garden Ponds
April is ideal for creating a new water garden or refreshing an existing pond, as new aquatic plants begin to arrive.

Sweet Peas
Over-wintered plants can now be planted outside, and new seeds can also be sown. Young plants are available at Farnborough Garden Centre.

Hanging Baskets and Containers
Begin planting in a greenhouse or conservatory. Protect young bedding plants from frost by keeping them under cover. Farnborough offers suitable plants and can also create custom hanging baskets.

Vegetables
Vegetable plants are available for both beds and containers. Even small spaces can produce a rewarding harvest.

Farnborough Garden Centre is now stocked with trees, shrubs, climbers and roses, along with garden accessories such as stepping stones, paving and decorative stone. The team is always happy to offer advice and help you find inspiration for your garden this April.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Happy Gardening, Pete.
