AlansAfrica: Yorkits for Banbury International Community School

Alans Africa Rotary year

When I visited the school in November last year, I took 6 Yorkits kits with me. These are re-useable feminine sanitary kits. Each kit is has – 8 pads, 2 pad pockets, a waterproof bag for carrying soiled items, 2 pairs of knickers, a flannel, a zip lock polythene bag to use as a “washing machine” in areas with poor access to water, and diagrams of how to use the kit. All packed into a discreet fabric drawstring bag. Each kit costs £10.

A kit lasts 3 years which equates to 200 days of education they don’t miss because of menstruation.

This was a trial batch of Yorkits, but due to the positive feedback, I despatched another 24 kits which arrived last month and a further 20 kits (possibly more) will go on my next shipment. The kits are made by a group of ladies at York Ainsty Rotary Club, and as you can see from the letter below, are really appreciated

“On behalf of all the girls at Banbury International Community School, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous support and the provision of the reusable sanitary kits.

The impact of your donation on our lives cannot be understated. We understand and deeply appreciate the significance of these kits, which not only address our immediate needs but also empower the girls to stay in school and pursue their dreams without disruption. Your commitment to ensuring our wellbeing and education is truly inspirational and we are immensely grateful.

Your belief in our potential and your commitment to our future, instill a sense of confidence within us. We are now more determined than ever to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals, knowing that we have allies like you by our side.

Once again. we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support and dedication towards empowering girls and ensuring their right to education. Your generosity is helping to create a brighter future for us. Thank you for being our beacon of hope and for making a lasting and real difference in our lives”.
