“He Is Risen, Baby”: Deadpool and Wolverine bring Marvel back to its glory days as the movie event of 2024
Last month, I wrote an article about the upcoming Marvel Studios film predicting that Marvel’s blockbuster, Deadpool and Wolverine, would slice and dice through the box office. Now, it not only seems the ‘Marvel Jesus’ (as Ryan Reynolds irresponsible hero deems himself throughout the film) achieved his goal of bringing the superhero franchise back to its commercial glory days but has broken a multitude of other records.
Star-Studded Performances Elevate Marvel
It stars Reynolds as the foul-mouthed Deadpool, tasked with saving his universe from destruction while navigating the multiverse. Recruiting a variant of Wolverine, played once again by Hugh Jackman, the not-so-dynamic duo is the latest of heroes in the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
It is hard to overstate just how successful the opening weekend of the R-rated buddy superhero sequel was, but it was easy to predict. The pairing of Reynolds and Jackman was a key influence, particularly the latter star as Jackman’s Wolverine has been appearing since the first X-Men movie in the year 2000. Furthermore, the movie is a fond reminder of the 20th Century Fox superhero era – back before Fox (now called 20th Century Studios) merged into Disney 2019 and the X-Men saga and others were scrapped.
Surpassing Financial Milestones
These attractions factored into the movie easily hitting the billion-dollar mark, grossing an incredible $1.2 billion worldwide. So far, it is the second-highest-grossing movie of the year following Disney’s Pixar adventure Inside Out 2, which earned $1.64 billion.
The movie has also crushed the competition of being the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. After earning $1.086 billion worldwide in just 23 days, it beat fellow comic-book blood-spiller Joker, which has held the title since 2019. Other R-rated movies include the previous two Deadpool movies and Logan, the supposed swan song for Jackman’s run as Wolverine. With those combined achievements, this third sequel has become the biggest opening in all of Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy’s (who collaborated with Reynolds in 2021’s Free Guy) respective careers.

Marvel’s Position in Historical Context
Most of all, the commercial success is enough to place it at No. 8 on Marvel’s all-time grossing chart behind Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion) and Black Panther ($1.334 billion). This accomplishment harks back to a time when Marvel Studios collected money as if it was its own superpower and redeemed its string of underperformers last year (including a few mutants). Ant Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels). To make things better for Marvel, Deadpool and Wolverine scored the fourth biggest opening weekend for a superhero film, only behind Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinity War.
Regaining the Top Spot
While it was briefly topped by Alien Romulus, which chest-burst with $41.5 million in its opening weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine, like its two leads, regenerated and reclaimed its spot as the king of the current screening competition. Others Blink Twice faltered in fourth place with $7.3 million from 3,067 theatres. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s R-rated reboot of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård, has bombed with $4.6 million from 2,752 theatres to open in eighth place.
Needless to say, fans and moviegoers won’t be saying “Bye, Bye, Bye” to Deadpool and Wolverine anytime soon as the MCU hit remains No. 1 for almost five weeks in a row. Should the unconventional superhero event maintain its dominance, it could be the highest grossing movie of 2024 (so far). Marvel Jesus indeed!
