A Personal Review of Freja Foods’ Bone Broth: The Ancient Elixir That Tastes Like a Hug

Freja Foods’ Bone Broth

As a nutritionist and someone who appreciates quality, I’ve always had a soft spot for bone broth. It’s one of those timeless foods that’s quietly powerful—steeped in tradition, but increasingly relevant today. So, when Freja Foods kindly sent me a selection of their products to try out, I was genuinely curious. Bone broth is essentially comfort in a cup… and who doesn’t need a bit more comfort these days?

The Arrival: Anticipation Meets Delivery

The package turned up in March, and I was looking forward to giving everything a proper go. Inside were cartons of their Chicken Bone Broth, Beef Bone Broth, and a few of their new protein shakes, including a surprisingly delicious Chocolate Bone Broth Protein Shake.

Let’s just say my taste buds were ready for action.

Chicken Bone Broth: The Comforting Classic

First up: the chicken. From the moment I poured it into a mug and heated it up, the aroma took me back—rich, savoury, and calming. It’s got that home-cooked feel, like someone’s been lovingly simmering it for hours. Which, frankly, is exactly the vibe you want.

Taste-wise? It’s smooth, balanced, and satisfying. There’s no overpowering saltiness or greasy mouthfeel—just clean, slow-cooked flavour with substance. Each 500ml carton gives you 16g of protein, and it’s surprisingly filling as a standalone drink.

I used it in everything from sipping straight from the mug (no shame here) to bulking out soups and even pouring over roast veg for a quick weekday dinner boost. You can check it out directly here: Chicken Bone Broth – Freja Foods.

Beef Bone Broth: Bold, Rich and Hearty

Next on my hit list was the Beef Bone Broth. And if the chicken was warm and familiar, this one was bold and assertive—like a good red wine or a proper Sunday roast.

This is the one I’d go for after a long day when I need something a bit more substantial. It has depth, almost a meaty sweetness, but still manages to stay light and easy to sip. There’s no greasy finish like with some other beef broths I’ve tried—just a clean, rich flavour that feels like it’s doing you some good. Again, 16g of protein in every carton. Quality stuff.

It’s brilliant on its own, but I also added it to a quick ramen bowl and used it as a base for a risotto. Game changer.

Protein Shakes: Bone Broth Goes Modern

Now here’s where Freja got clever. They’ve taken the base power of bone broth and turned it into something ready-made and modern: a protein shake with proper nutritional clout.

I tried their Chocolate Bone Broth Protein Shake, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much. But I was pleasantly surprised—think creamy chocolate milk with 13g of protein and 11g of collagen, no weird aftertaste, and none of the guilt. It’s indulgent without being heavy.

It makes a great post-workout refuel, or a late-afternoon snack when you need something to tide you over. They also offer Vanilla Bean and Wild Strawberry flavours for anyone with a sweeter tooth.

Quality You Can Taste (and Trust)

One thing that stands out about Freja is their attention to detail. These aren’t just good-tasting broths—they’re responsibly made, with 100% natural ingredients, and no gluten, dairy, or unnecessary additives. They’re slow-cooked for over 24 hours, made with grass-fed beef bones and free-range chicken bones, and sourced from family-run farms across Scandinavia and the EU.

There’s a level of integrity to what they do, and as someone who values traditional nutrition, that goes a long way.

You can read more about their process and ethos here: About Freja Foods.

The Verdict: A Daily Essential

After trying these broths and shakes, they’ve well and truly earned their spot in my fridge. I now keep a couple of cartons handy for when I need something nourishing, fast. Whether it’s a light meal, a quick snack, or just something to warm me up without the fuss—Freja delivers.

In a world full of shortcuts and over-processed junk, this is real food, made properly. And the best part? It tastes like it.

Cheers to ancient wisdom with a modern twist. And big thanks to Tamsin and the team at Freja for introducing me to what I can only describe as liquid gold.
