But here’s the best part: saving that money doesn’t require switching to a dodgy provider or living with buffering YouTube videos. You can keep the same internet speed, same router, same convenience — and still cut your bill dramatically.

1. Know Your Contract Like the Back of Your Router

Before you call anyone, check your contract:

  • Are you in a fixed-term or rolling contract?
  • When does it end?

If the first person you speak to doesn’t offer a decent discount, don’t accept it.

Instead, ask to be transferred to the retentions or cancellations team. This is the group trained to keep you from leaving — and they usually have access to better deals, exclusive discounts, and loyalty perks.

They’ll almost certainly ask:

“What would it take to keep you?”

That’s your cue to give them the price you want (based on your competitor research), or ask them to beat it.

4. Check the Small Print Before You Say Yes

If they offer you a new deal, don’t jump on it straight away. Ask:

  • Is there a new contract term?
  • Any installation or upgrade fees?
  • Does the price rise after six months?

Take notes, then thank them and ask for time to consider it. This gives you the chance to compare your offer against other providers, and decide if switching is still the better option.

Don’t be pressured into agreeing on the spot. They want your loyalty — but only on terms that work for you.


5. Say Yes, Save Money, and Set a Reminder

Once you’re happy with the offer, accept it and enjoy the savings. Then do one last important thing:

If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support or certain other benefits, you may qualify for a “Social Tariff” broadband plan.

These plans:

  • Start from £12–£20 a month
  • Often offer speeds suitable for streaming and working from home
  • Are contract-free or come with flexible terms

But here’s the catch: providers don’t promote these deals. You have to ask directly or check the Ofcom website’s social tariff list.
