Alison Hammond on joy, resilience, and staying true to herself.
Alison Hammond is one of British television’s brightest and best-loved personalities. She is a presenter who radiates warmth, quick wit, and comes equipped with a Brummie laugh that’s as infectious as it is unforgettable. Yet behind the 50-year-old’s sunny on-screen persona lies a story of quiet strength, resilience and real graft.
“I’ve always tried to just be myself, because that’s what people connect with,” she begins. “If I had changed to fit in, I don’t think I’d still be here.”
Born in ‘the second city’ to Jamaican parents, Hammond grew up on a council estate in Kingstanding, where money was tight but humour and heart were in abundance. “My mum worked so hard, raising three kids on her own. She showed me what determination looks like, and I took on that inspiration when I was old enough to start forging my own path,” she recalls. “We didn’t have a lot, but we had love, and we had laughter.”
It wasn’t until Big Brother in 2002 that the nation first met Alison Hammond – a short-lived stint, yet one that sparked the start of a presenting career. “I often think I came along – right place, right time.

“I was only in the Big Brother house for two weeks! I thought that was it – my five minutes were up,” she laughs. “Yet something clicked with people – they saw me, the real me, and maybe they liked that. I also think there was no one on mainstream TV like me at the time, and there’s always interest in someone a bit different.”
From there came stints on This Morning, where her irreverent celebrity interviews – often derailed by laughter – became legendary. “I never go in with an agenda. I just want to have a laugh and make people feel relaxed. Maybe that’s my secret… I don’t pretend, and in the current climate, certainly, there is value in authenticity.”
However, success hasn’t come without challenges. Hammond has spoken about being overlooked in her early years in TV. “I remember thinking, ‘Maybe I’m not what they’re looking for after all?’, so I certainly know I’ve had to fight for what I’ve gained.” Nowadays, she’s a mainstay, co-hosting The Great British Bake Off and regularly fronting This Morning with style and ease. “It still blows my mind sometimes – how far I’ve come, but we’ve all, always, got to look forward…to more laughs, more love, more living.
“I never thought I’d have this life, so I’m going to make sure I enjoy every second of it.”
