Renault 4

The Renault 4 is back, and it’s electric. The all-new Renault 4 E‑Tech Electric reimagines the beloved classic as a compact electric SUV for the modern era. Combining retro-inspired looks with everyday practicality, smart tech and a usable electric range, it’s a confident evolution of one of Renault’s most iconic cars.

Originally launched in 1961, the Renault 4 became a favourite across Europe thanks to its versatility and charm. More than eight million were sold before it left production in the early 90s. Now, the name returns, but the car is completely re-engineered for 21st-century drivers.

Visually, the new Renault 4 stands out with design cues that nod to its past while embracing the future. Sculpted doors, upright rear pillars and pill-shaped taillights are all echoes of the original, while an illuminated front grille and glowing Renault badge push the styling into modern territory. Optional touches like a motorised fabric roof blend nostalgia with innovation.

Step inside and you’re met with playful, functional design. Upholstery inspired by denim, copper accents and smart storage areas give the cabin a stylish yet practical feel. There’s even an optional baguette holder, proof that Renault hasn’t lost its sense of humour. Despite being compact, the Renault 4 is surprisingly roomy. Rear seat passengers benefit from plenty of headroom and legroom, and the boot offers a generous 420 litres of space, more than enough for everyday use. Fold the rear seats, and that expands to over 1,400 litres.

Technology is at the forefront, with dual 10-inch screens, one for the digital driver display and another for media and navigation. Powered by Android Automotive, it also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration.

Under the bonnet, a 150-horsepower electric motor delivers smooth, responsive performance. The 52 kWh battery offers a real-world range of around 240 to 250 miles. It’s ideal for commuting, weekends away and everything in between. Fast-charging capability allows for 150 miles of range in about 30 minutes at a rapid charger. You can also charge at home and even use the car’s battery to power external devices thanks to vehicle-to-load functionality.

On the road, the Renault 4 E‑Tech is easy to drive and surprisingly nimble. Adjustable regenerative braking, controlled via paddles on the steering wheel, gives you the option of a relaxed drive or a more dynamic one-pedal experience, great for stop-start traffic. The ride is smooth, and the raised driving position adds to the car’s SUV feel.

Prices are expected to start from around £26,995, making it attractively positioned above the new Renault 5 but still within reach for many drivers looking to make the switch to electric. It competes well with similar-sized models like the Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger and MG 4.
