The 98th Academy Award nominations were announced on January 22 at 13:30 GMT, with The Color Purplestar Danielle Brooks and Top Gun: Maverickactor Lewis Pullman revealing contenders across all 23 Oscar categories.
Leading the 2026 Oscars is Sinners, which scored a record-breaking 16 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The film’s dominance represents a watershed moment for the horror genre, long marginalised by the Academy. That resistance began to crack last year when Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance secured nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress for Demi Moore. That breakthrough paved the way for Sinners, as Ryan Coogler’s audacious blend of vampires, blues music and Southern gothic storytelling surged ahead of the competition.
Close behind is One Battle After Anotherwith 13 nominations, while Frankenstein, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value each earned nine. All five films are nominated for Best Picture, alongside Bugonia, F1, Hamnet, The Secret AgentandTrain Dreams, making for one of the most eclectic Best Picture line-ups in recent Oscar history.

Among the studios, Warner Bros. emerged as the clear leader, collecting 30 nominations overall, bolstered by the success of Sinners and One Battle After Another. Neon followed with 18 nominations, driven largely by The Secret Agentand Sentimental Value, while Netflix secured 16 nods, including recognition for Frankenstein and Train Dreams.
The nominations were not without controversy. Wicked: For Good was notably shut out, despite the strong performance of its predecessor at last year’s ceremony. Paul Mescal was also absent from the acting lineup, missing a nomination for his turn as William Shakespeare in Hamnet.
There were, however, several unexpected bright spots. Kate Hudson landed a surprise nomination for her performance in Blue Song Song, while Delroy Lindo earned his first-ever Oscar nomination for Sinners, marking a long-overdue moment of recognition in a career spanning more than five decades. Lindo is one of several first-time nominees this year, including his Sinners co-star Michael B. Jordan, who received his first Best Actor nomination for playing twin brothers Stag and Smoke.

Shifting from vampires to stitched-together monsters, Critics Choice Award winner Jacob Elordi also picked up his first Oscar nomination, recognised for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the misunderstood creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Also celebrating a standout awards season is Best Supporting Actress nominee Teyana Taylor, who makes a lasting impact with just 20 minutes of screen time in One Battle After Another. Her Oscar nod follows her emotional Golden Globe win earlier this year.
