Gardener’s Diary February 26

As we step into February, the garden presents a deceptive face. Days that hint at spring’s arrival are often chased away by bitter winter chills. Yet, these fleeting mild spells are a gardener’s cue to begin the season’s work, always mindful that winter’s grip lingers.

Seeds and Planting:

February is ideal for sowing seeds. Whether you’re starting them indoors on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse, ensure you use the right compost and maintain consistent moisture and temperature. For outdoor planting, pre-warm the soil with horticultural fleece, which also offers protection from frost and pests.

Garden Construction:

Now is the time to execute any planned garden alterations. Remember, thorough planning and appropriate safety gear are key.

Pruning and Maintenance:

Complete winter washes for top fruits like apples and pears. Prune climbing roses, focusing on removing weak shoots and training new growth. Continue general winter pruning, aiming to finish by month’s end.

Seed Potatoes and Wildlife:

Visit Farnborough Garden Centre for a diverse selection of seed potatoes. Also, continue supporting wild birds with food and nesting boxes, as they begin their courtship and nesting.

Patio Care:

Protect your patio pots and planters from frost, primarily caused by water-logging.

Plants in Spotlight:

Brighten your garden with Hellebores, Viburnum Tinus, Dwarf Narcissus, Species Crocus, Mahonia Japonicas, Corylus Avellana, Ericas, and Daphnes.

At Farnborough Garden Centre, we’re gearing up for the season. Our nursery is bustling with watering, feeding, and weeding. The retail area is being refreshed with new plants and products. We eagerly await your visit to explore our expanding range of plants, garden essentials, and giftware.

February in the garden is a blend of anticipation and action. Embrace this month as a time to prepare, plan, and plant, setting the stage for a splendid spring.

Happy Gardening, Pete.
