Spider-Man and Apple TV+ Dominate August Streaming Charts as Audiences Look Ahead to Autumn

Spider-Man fever is showing no signs of slowing down. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its record-breaking run-in cinemas, Marvel fans are heading back to previous adventures on streaming, with Spider-Man: No Way Home taking the top spot in the latest August JustWatch charts and Spider-Man: Homecoming climbing to third.

The renewed interest in the web-slinger comes as Brand New Day has become a box-office phenomenon. The latest Tom Holland-led outing opened with a staggering $360 million domestically, making it the biggest domestic opening weekend in box-office history and beating the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame. It also became the second-biggest global opening ever, collecting $932 million worldwide in its first weekend.

The film’s momentum has continued well beyond its opening. Brand New Day crossed $1 billion globally in just six days, faster than all films except Avengers: Endgame to reach that milestone. By the middle of August, it had passed the $2 billion mark worldwide, becoming only the eighth film ever to achieve the feat and the second-fastest to do so. The extraordinary theatrical performance appears to be translating into renewed interest in Spider-Man’s back catalogue, with audiences revisiting some of the franchise’s most popular entries at home.

It’s not just blockbuster superheroes making an impression. Good Boy, the viral indie horror film featuring a canine protagonist, has held onto seventh place in the August charts. Made on a shoestring budget, its presence is particularly notable in a Top 10 otherwise packed with major franchises, blockbuster productions and A-list stars. Its strong performance suggests that streaming audiences are still willing to seek out smaller, word-of-mouth hits alongside the biggest Hollywood releases.

Apple TV+ Has a Summer to Remember

Apple TV+ is also enjoying a strong showing this August, thanks in large part to the return of some much-loved series. Ted Lasso has taken the top spot in the TV charts following the arrival of its fourth season, marking the comedy’s return after a years-long hiatus.

The return has clearly struck a chord with viewers. First premiering in 2020, Ted Lasso became one of Apple’s most recognisable original series, and its comeback has prompted fans to revisit the beloved characters and catch up before settling into the new season. Season four premiered on August 5, making it one of the month’s major streaming events.

Elsewhere, House of the Dragon has claimed second place. The Game of Thrones spin-off recently wrapped its third season, giving fans plenty of reason to revisit the series and relive the latest developments in the Targaryen saga.

The strong performance of both shows highlights how much audiences continue to value established franchises and returning favourites. Rather than relying solely on brand-new releases, streamers are benefiting from the enthusiasm generated by the long-awaited comebacks of familiar shows.

Autumn Is Already Creeping In

While August may still be summer, UK streaming audiences appear to be getting into an autumnal mood. Practical Magic has re-entered the Top 10 movie charts at number six, suggesting that viewers are already reaching for something a little cosier, more nostalgic, and more supernatural.

With Spider-Man dominating the movie conversation, Ted Lasso leading the TV charts and classics such as Practical Magic finding a new audience, August’s JustWatch rankings show that streaming habits can be driven by more than the latest release. From blockbuster cinema to beloved returning series and nostalgic favourites, audiences are mixing the new with the familiar as the summer begins to wind down.
