At Banbury Buzz, we see this every month. People may arrive hoping to make new business contacts, but the strongest connections often lead to collaborations, friendships and community projects that would never have happened otherwise.
Why Community Involvement Matters
Supporting a charity or local cause doesn’t require a large corporate budget. Small businesses can make a valuable contribution through their time, expertise, contacts or platforms.
It can also benefit the people involved. Working towards a shared goal gives teams and business contacts something positive to unite around. It creates conversations outside the usual day-to-day pressures and can strengthen a sense of purpose and belonging.
For small business owners, who can sometimes feel isolated, becoming involved in a community initiative is also another way to build genuine relationships. People get to know the person behind the business, not just the service they provide.
The key is to choose something that feels authentic. Support a cause that matters to you, find an activity you genuinely enjoy and think about how your existing skills and network could help.
Start With What You Already Have
You do not need to create an elaborate campaign. A successful fundraiser might begin with a simple question: what do we already have that could bring people together?
For Bloxham Mill Workspaces, one of Banbury Buzz’s sponsors, the answer was its welcoming coworking space and strong local business community.
On Thursday 24 September, Bloxham Mill is hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning with a difference. For just £10, visitors can enjoy a day of coworking and cake, with the full £10 going directly to Macmillan Cancer Support.
It is a simple idea that uses the space, community and facilities already available to create something positive. Visitors can experience a productive change of scenery, meet other local professionals and support an important cause at the same time.
Other businesses might contribute by donating a prize, offering a venue, sharing an event with their customers or giving their team time to get involved. One person rarely has everything needed to deliver a successful fundraiser, but a well-connected community usually does.
From Networking to Fundraising
The coffee morning is part of a wider fundraising effort led by Banbury Buzz Host Lisa-Marie Mallier and Emma McGregor of Bloxham Mill Workspaces.
The pair are taking on HYROX Birmingham on 1 November to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Neither considers herself a natural runner, so the challenge will involve stepping firmly outside their comfort zone.
They are also inviting the wider community to support them through a Family Bingo Night at Lock29 on Friday 9 October.
Doors open at 6pm, with bingo starting at 6.30pm. Tickets cost just £5 per player and include all standard bingo games.
Guests can expect multiple rounds of bingo, fantastic prizes and a charity raffle, with an optional cash flyer available for players aged 18 and over.
Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult, and those attending but not playing can come free of charge. Many of Lock29’s independent food vendors will also be open, serving burgers, chips, crêpes, ice cream and more.
Lisa-Marie and Emma hope to raise at least £800 for Macmillan Cancer Support. According to Macmillan, £815 could pay for a Macmillan Support Worker for one week, helping people living with cancer access the support they need.
The bingo night is possible thanks to Lock29 providing the venue, and local businesses and contacts supporting the event with prizes, promotion, and practical help.
Every Contribution Counts
Community support does not always mean organising an event yourself. Attending a coffee morning, buying a bingo ticket, donating a raffle prize, sharing a post or encouraging someone else to take part can all make a difference.
Most importantly, community involvement works best when it brings people together. Both events offer an affordable way to meet others, enjoy something different and support a charity that affects so many people and families.
