AlansAfrica: Westminster Community Secondary School

10 June 2024
in Charity, Culture
Alans Africa Rotary year

The rainwater harvesting and handwash station on the toilet block has been completed. Guttering on the rear aspect feeds the water into a 1,000-litre tank, which connects to the stainless-steel sink. It may look basic but it will improve the sanitation for the children at the school and “Make A Real Difference” to the children’s everyday hygiene. Some of the children being shown the system and being told the importance of using the facility at Westminster Community Secondary School.

Small changes make big differences

Westminster Community Secondary School

Mr Alan

On behalf of the children, parents, staff and community members at Westminster Community Secondary School I want to thank you and your supporters who sponsored the handwash station project. They have demonstrated love and kindness to make a real difference in our community. The building of the 3 classrooms, the toilet block and the refurbishment of the well have made a significant impact on the life of our community members. Bless you all.

Community garden project

At the school, there is a good amount of land and we are just starting to develop this as a community garden. This will allow parents to grow their own crops for their personal use, allow them to swap crops amongst themselves and sell some produce.

Easington Sports FC – kit donation

A week ago, I collected a large consignment of second-hand football kit from the Club. I have already despatched a complete set of shirts to Sierra Leone and with the help of Daniel, a 13-year-old Duke of Edinburgh volunteer, and David a fellow Rotarian we spent three hours on Sunday sorting through it all. It included another 5 full sets of team shirts, dozens of pairs of shorts, tracksuit tops and lots of other assorted items. These will be boxed up and sent on my next consignment from the UK. Many thanks to the Club for this latest donation.

I have also just collected a large quantity of kit from Cumnor Juniors FC (Oxford) and am awaiting a donation of kit from Banbury Irish FC. All this kit will be Sierra Leone bound in the next few weeks.
