Hello fellow gardeners! May is one of my favourite months in the garden. Everything’s waking up, the colour is coming back, and there’s plenty to keep us busy.
First things first – hold off just a little longer on frost-tender bedding plants. The sun might be shining, but a cold snap can still creep in. Keep those begonias and petunias protected until we’re safely past the frosts.
Roses are on the move now, which means so are Greenfly and Black Spot. A regular spray with a combined treatment will help keep your blooms healthy. Alpines and rockery plants are showing their best right now too – low-growing, colourful, and perfect for tricky spots.
If you’ve got space for more structure, now’s a great time to plant herbaceous perennials, trees, and shrubs. At the centre, our Hostas, Irises, Bamboos and flowering cherries are all looking brilliant. We’ve also got semi-mature specimens if you want something with instant impact.
Fruit trees – including dwarf and patio varieties – are ideal this month. And don’t forget, plums and cherries can be pruned now to avoid silver leaf disease.
Over in the veg patch, most vegetable seeds can go straight in now. Or skip the seed trays and pick up young veg plants ready to plant – we’ve got everything from cabbage to celery. Got a greenhouse? Now’s the time to get those tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers going. Just keep some fleece handy for chilly nights.
Hanging baskets and containers can be planted up now too – we’ve got Geraniums, Fuchsias and more, plus lots of new pots and planters in our pottery area.
And if you’ve got a pond, come and see our aquatic area – perfect for topping up plants and keeping things healthy with barley straw and aquatic soil.
Whatever your garden goals this May, we’ve got the plants, tools, and friendly advice to help. Come see us on the A423 near Banbury – and don’t forget to say hi!
