2024 Review: The Year That Was

2024 Review Feature

Whether you’re still reeling from the seismic political shifts or can still detect those echoing cheers for your favourite Olympian. In this 2024 review, we show that this year we’ll never be forgotten.

Goals and Golds

The year 2024 was a fantastic year for sport! Team GB made us all proud at the Paris Olympics, winning a total of 65 medals, ranking seventh in the overall medal table.

Highlights included Alex Yee winning the men’s triathlon, Keely Hodgkinson topping the podium in the women’s 800m, with huge waves made in the pool including the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team successfully defending their title.

The other major sporting event for many of us was of course the UEFA Euro 2024 championship in Germany. The tournament was thrilling for fans of the Three Lions, with Spain’s triumph in the Berlin final once again leaving England one step away from greatness.

The End of An Era

July 4th, 2024, was a significant day for the UK as the General Election saw an end to the Conservative government’s 14 years in power.

Under Sir Kier Starmer, Labour secured 412 seats, an impressive majority and the worst defeat in history for the Tories who maintained a mere 121 seats; yet their early tenure has been fraught with issues.

Nigel Farage also had cause for celebration as his Reform Party secured seats in parliament for the first time.

2024 Review

Glastonbury Mania

As usual, the annual Glastonbury festival was a diverse and supremely entertaining affair. Dua Lipa made her Pyramid Stage debut as the top act on Friday night, Coldplay made history on the Saturday evening as they marked their fifth time as Glasto headliners, while SZA took the spotlight on Sunday.

Amazonian Adventure

This year saw a major discovery in the Amazon Rainforest as vast ancient settlements were unearthed.

Using advanced lidar technology, researchers mapped over 26 sites, revealing large urban centres complete with roadways, canals and massive ceremonial structures. These findings challenge the long-held belief that the Amazon was an untouched wilderness, showing that sophisticated societies once thrived there over a thousand years ago.

Arguably the world’s greatest festival, Glasto did however cause a stir by refusing to show any of the Euro 2024 football matches, which led to One Direction star Louis Tomlinson being hailed as hero for setting up his own TV (attached to a trolley with a generator).

A Light to Remember

Finally, in tribute to what remains the largest naval, air and land operation in history, on the June 6th the UK and France marked 80 years since the historic D-Day landings.

Torches were lit across the country and on the beaches of Normandy, the Red Devils streamed across the sky, and the world remembered the sacrifices of those who fought and died to liberate Europe during World War II.

We hope you enjoyed this 2024 review and we wish you the best 2025!
