Alans Africa: Kono Town Primary school

16 June 2025
in Charity, Culture
Alans Africa Rotary year

The next planned project is the total refurbishment of the three-classroom primary school in Kono Town, Freetown. The galvanised zinc roof needs total replacement, as it is more like a colander than a roof!! The budget for the project, with the current material costs & exchange rate, is £4,550. Currently I have £1,400 allocated and I’m intending to undertake a sponsored event and will start a Just Giving page when I have sorted out the final details of the event.

Westminster Community Secondary School, staff hostel – latest news

There are two identical washrooms in the Hostel, both sponsored by Misbourne Matins Rotary Club. Although there is no running water connected, the staff can fetch water from the school/community well, about fifty yards away, and store it in large plastic barrels just outside the washrooms. To us, this may not seem ideal, but to the staff it is something of a luxury as most of them would not have this at home Many thanks to Misbourne Matins Rotary Club for their sponsorship, – “Making A Real Difference”.

This photo, may not appear very exciting, BUT it shows the start of an area, immediately next to the hostel, which will provide the staff with a covered cooking shelter. Work is progressing well and I hope that the shelter will be completed by the end of June.

To us, with our fitted kitchens, this may seem really basic, but for them it will provide a facility which means that they will no longer have to cook outside in all weathers.
