Moonlight, camera, action!

The streets of Banbury will be filled with film stars in May when Katharine House Hospice’s movie-themed Moonlight Walk takes place.

The Hospice’s flagship Moonlight Walk event will take place at Easington Sports Club on Saturday the 20th of May from 7pm.

This year, Katharine House is ‘Going to the Movies’, and is inviting the hundreds of walkers that take part every year to take on a 6-mile or 10-mile walk dressed as their favourite film star.

The evening kicks off with a pre-walk picnic at Easington Sports Football Club with movie-themed music and local food stalls before the walkers head off towards Bodicote and beyond!

Events Project Manager for Katharine House, Helen Lerwill, said: “The Moonlight Walk is one of our most popular, most successful events. It raises around £50,000 for us every year and it is always such a lot of fun. We’re excited about the theme this year. Everyone has their favourite film or favourite character and we’re really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!”

Caring for our community

Among those taking part is Julie Mills whose husband Dave was cared for by the hospice following his terminal cancer diagnosis in 2018.

Julie says she is keen to raise money for the place that took such exceptional care of the loving father-of-two.

“Right from the outset, the hospice felt peaceful, caring, sensitive and is set in such beautiful surroundings. It was incredibly refreshing to work with a team that was focused on making end-of-life care as personal and supportive as possible.

“The nurses were so attentive and supported me to care for Dave myself, which I treasure. The doctors were also wonderful because they answered my many questions with honesty and clarity.

“Being at the hospice was so different to being in a hospital setting, as suddenly everything was focused on you and your experience. They were open, consultative and incredibly respectful of Dave: the patient, and me: the soon-to-be-bereaved partner.

Making a difference when it matters

“The love and dedication shown to us was just amazing and I marvel at these people. It was like they would often second guess what I was wondering or wanting, and they catered both for physical and emotional requirements with the utmost professionalism and efficiency.

“Everyone at the hospice was so friendly, loving and sad for our loss. It’s clear that these people are not just doing a job but are living through these deaths with the families and friends – they really care.

“We are privileged to have such an amazing provision on our doorstep, including the bereavement counselling that I later received. I am so glad Dave felt this was the place he wanted to be as his life ended.”
