Gardiner’s Diary June 23

Hey there, green thumbs! Summer is finally here, and it’s about time we enjoy our gardens after all that heavy work. But keep your gardening gloves on just yet, as we might still get some sneaky late frosts that could harm your tender bedding and veggies.

June is the month when our gardens transform into stunning live canvases, with roses, herbaceous plants, summer bedding, and patio plants taking centre stage. Sure, the weeds and grass might try to steal the spotlight, but with your trusty tools in hand, you’re ready for the action.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and get cracking on the essential tasks this month:

  1. Roses – The Prima Donnas: Pests and diseases love warm, moist conditions. Keep a watchful eye on your roses, and if needed, spray some magic potions to keep them safe and blooming. Remember, organic and biological controls are the new cool!
  2. Trees & Shrubs – The Trusty Backdrops: Once your deciduous shrubs have finished their spring performance, give them a trim to keep them in shape for their next show.
  3. Container-grown trees and shrubs – The Portable Stars: There’s still time to add more stars to your garden stage. Just ensure they get a good soak regularly, especially during dry spells.
  4. Patio Pots & Hanging Baskets – The Suspended Marvels: Now’s the time to dazzle your patio with colourful blooms in pots and hanging baskets. Swing by Farnborough Garden Centre to pick from our vast selection of plants and pots.
  5. Water Gardens – The Aquatic Retreats: Your water garden or pond could do with some new additions this month. Dive into our range of water plants, snails, and even self-contained water features.
  6. Vegetables – The Edible Delights: Continue planting your veggie garden with everything from cabbages to beetroot. Not enough room? Try mixing some veggies in your flowerbeds or containers for that home-grown taste.
  7. Greenhouses – The Exotic Oasis: Explore our range of greenhouse-ready veggies at Farnborough Garden Centre, and start planting in pots, tubs, or grow bags under glass.

Let’s not forget the stars of this month: Viburnum, Lavender, Roses, Clematis, Wisteria, Ceanothus, Japanese Acers, Fuchsias, Photinia, Euonymus, and Herbaceous Plants.

June is a celebration of colour in our gardens, and there’s still time to add more to the mix. Pop by Farnborough Garden Centre for all your garden needs and, while you’re here, enjoy a Farmhouse Ice Cream or pick out a special collector’s Teddy Bear from our Treasured Teddies shop.

Happy Gardening,

Pete Toms
