Your Ultimate Guide to Gardening in September: Tips from Pete Toms at Farnborough Garden Centre

4 September 2023
in Gardens, Homes, Lifestyle

Hi there, fellow green thumbs! Pete Toms here from Farnborough Garden Centre. As we bid adieu to summer and welcome the golden hues of autumn, I thought I’d share some gardening wisdom to help you make the most of this transitional month.

Embracing the Autumnal Shift

September is that magical time when the morning mists paint a serene picture, and nature starts its preparations for the winter slumber. It’s a time to relish the last summer moments and gear up for the gardening tasks ahead.

Monthly Must-Dos

1. Perennial Care:

  • Now’s the perfect time to take cuttings from tender perennials like fuchsias, geraniums, and argyranthemums. Aim to do this early to give those roots a fighting chance before the chill sets in.
  • Keep up with dead-heading to extend those beautiful blooms.
  • Looking for new perennials? Farnborough Garden Centre has a vibrant collection. Plant them now to ensure they root well before winter.

2. Water Gardens:

  • Time to declutter! Thin out crowded plants and divide the ones you’d like more of.
  • Need supplies? We’ve got aquatic soil and containers ready for you.
  • A pro tip? Net your ponds to prevent leaves from falling in. Trust me; you’ll thank yourself later.

3. Pots and Containers:

  • Dead-head any lingering annuals and use liquid fertiliser to keep them going.
  • Fancy a late summer display? We’ve got special offers on summer bedding and pots. Grab them while they last!

4. Lawn Love:

  • Dreaming of a lush lawn? September is ideal for sowing seeds or laying turf. Just remember to water them well.
  • Existing lawns need some TLC too. Think scarifying, aeration, and autumn top dressing. And if you spot any bald patches, now’s the time to seed them.
  • Need supplies? From treatments to aerators, Farnborough Garden Centre has got you covered.

5. Autumn Bedding Plants:

  • Refresh your garden with our range of autumn bedding plants. Think pansies, violas, and cyclamen, among others.

6. Spring Flowering Bulbs:

  • Dreaming of a colourful spring? Plant your bulbs now. From tulips to snowdrops, we’ve got a plethora to choose from.
  • A little reminder: If you’re hoping for hyacinth blooms by Christmas, make sure you plant them this month!

7. For the Bird Lovers:

  • Start your autumn feeding now to attract birds for the winter months. From foods to feeders, we’ve got everything you need.
