Autumnal Charms and Garden Arms: Your October Gardening Guide

2 October 2023
in Gardens, Lifestyle

Hi there, garden aficionados! Pete Toms here, back from Farnborough Garden Centre with a fresh batch of tips to spice up your October garden, following our September insights. The leaves are turning, the air’s crisping up – and your garden? It’s ready for the next chapter.

October’s Garden Song: From Warm Tones to Cool Grooves

October sings a melodious tune of vibrant russets, fiery reds, and those last hints of golden summer sun. As we embrace the heart of autumn, it’s time to prep your garden for winter’s embrace while cherishing autumn’s fiery display.

October Tasks for the Dedicated Gardener

1. Transitioning from Summer Bedding:

Give your garden a refreshing look by swapping out tired summer blooms for rich autumn and winter beddings. Think pansies, cyclamen, and hearty violas.

2. Bulbs for Brighter Springs:

Dream of daffodils, tulips, and snowdrops? October’s your month. And if you missed planting hyacinth bulbs in September, hurry! There’s still a chance for Christmas blooms.

3. Veggie Patch Prep:

Lift your spuds, stash them in a frost-free space, and start winter-digging. And let’s not forget about nourishing our soil with compost or manure.

4. Pots, Containers, and Beyond:

Breathe life into your containers with autumn/winter blooms. Tip: Introduce some spring-flowering bulbs underneath for a surprise burst of colour in spring!

5. Lawns Deserve Love Too:

Keep up the TLC! Aerate, scarify, and feed them with an autumn top dressing. And for bald spots? Seed them pronto.

6. Bird Buddies:

Winter is coming, and our feathered friends could use some help. Continue your autumn feeding routines, and perhaps introduce some new feeders?

Star Blooms this October, admire and consider these for your garden:

Japanese Acers: Vibrant autumnal hues!

Solidago and Sedums: Late bloomers with flair.

Pyracantha: Berries to dazzle the eye.

Viburnum Opulus & Phoyinias: A burst of colour and elegance.

Why Keep Coming to Farnborough Garden Centre?

Aside from our expansive plant collection, our shelves boast an array of pottery, gifts, home-ware, and so much more. Teddy bear fans, our delightful “Treasured Teddies” selection continues to grow!

Pop in, grab a Farmhouse Ice Cream or settle with a cuppa and cake in the autumn sun. We’re eager to share this season with you.

Cheers to a fabulous October, and as always, happy gardening!
