Valentine’s Day: The Big Gesture

Valentine's Day The Big Gesture Feature

In the realm of romance, Valentine’s Day stands as a beacon for grand gestures. From skywriting love notes to surprise trips abroad, lovers have long used this day to express their deepest feelings in the most extravagant ways. Yet there is no guarantee that these grandiose displays will pave the way to true everlasting love…

Celebrity Gestures: Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner

On Valentine’s Day 2020, for instance, and as an early birthday surprise, rapper Travis Scott lavished partner Kylie Jenner with an extravagant display of flowers. Socialite Jenner showcased in a video how her beau transformed the house with a sea of rose petals and large red flower arrangements.

In the clip, their daughter Stormi appears overjoyed, playfully tossing petals in the air, outshining her mother’s excitement. Jenner also shared a note from Scott that said, “Happy birthday! We’re just getting started. Love you!”.

However, sadly, by June 2023, they had parted ways.

Royal Romance: Prince William and Kate Middleton

Being apart wasn’t something Prince William and Kate Middleton had to factor into their burgeoning romance, given they attended St Andrews together and even, as students, lived in the same shared house.

With the exception of two months back in 2007 when the couple parted ways, with Kate deeming the media pressure simply too great, the pair have been relentless in their support of each other for over two decades.

Last year, to mark 20 years since they first moved in together, William gifted Kate 50 red roses on Valentine’s Day.

The Curious Concept of Grand Gestures

The concept of a grand gesture is a curious one; simply splurging on an idea is not enough. After all, when an act feels out of character or forced, it might bring a brief thrill or excitement, but this is often fleeting.

Valentine's Day The Big Gesture

Sincere Expressions: The Foundation of Lasting Love

The greater truth is that enduring love is built on actions which are genuine and heartfelt, and encompass the other 364 days of the year in reflecting the true nature of a relationship. It’s these sincere, consistent expressions of affection and understanding that truly form the foundation of a commitment that lasts.

David and Victoria Beckham: A Lesson in Authenticity

Consider David and Victoria Beckham. The celebrity couple, known for their resilient relationship and strong family values, once celebrated Valentine’s Day with a private wine tasting in Napa Valley. This gesture was perfectly in line with their shared love for fine wines and private moments away from the public eye.

However, majestic presents or events can sometimes overshadow the essential ingredients of a healthy relationship, like communication, trust, respect and humility.

And, sure enough, to show they don’t take February 14th too seriously, in 2020 David flipped the script by buying Victoria perhaps the simplest Valentine’s gift of them all – a £1 packet of Minstrels and copy of Country Life magazine, her favourite!

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: A Cautionary Tale

At the other end of the scale, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard vacationed in the Bahamas for a romantic getaway on Valentine’s Day in 2013, leading to the Pirates of the Caribbean star to actually purchase one of the private islands there. However, despite the luxurious setting, their relationship was fraught with issues, eventually leading to a highly publicised and tumultuous divorce.

It eventually crumbled under the weight of unresolved conflicts, showing that grand gestures can only be built on solid foundations.

The Essence of Authentic Valentine’s Gestures

These contrasting examples beg the question: what makes a Valentine’s gesture conducive to long-term love? Psychology suggests that the key lies not in the size or the nature of the gesture, but in its authenticity and alignment with the couple’s unique dynamic.

Getting it right is all about considering the recipient’s love language. That means for some, while a grand public display may be deeply moving, others may simply feel won over by a quiet evening spent together… though at very least opt for the expensive takeaway!
