Budget Friendly Meals Feature

If you’re trying to save money on your food budget, consider these delicious meals that all begin with the humble can and make a wonderful budget friendly meal.

Canned foods have long been a staple in kitchens around the world, offering convenience, affordability, and extended shelf life, making them ideal for budget meal planning. While some may associate canned foods with bland or uninspiring meals, they can actually be the foundation of delicious and nutritious dishes. All you need is a can-do attitude!

Creamy Tomato Soup

Canned tomatoes are a versatile ingredient that can be used to create a comforting bowl of creamy tomato soup, a perfect budget-friendly dinner. Simply sauté some onions and garlic, add canned diced tomatoes, vegetable broth, and your choice of spices. After a quick simmer, blend the mixture until smooth, and finish with a touch of cream for a rich and velvety texture. Serve with crusty bread or a grilled cheese sandwich for a classic, nourishing, and budget-friendly meal.

Tuna Pasta Salad

Canned tuna is a protein-packed pantry staple that can be transformed into a delightful pasta salad. Combine cooked pasta with canned tuna, diced vegetables like bell peppers, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes, and a dressing made from mayonnaise, lemon juice, and fresh herbs. It’s a light and refreshing dish perfect for picnics or quick weeknight dinners, and it’s incredibly budget-friendly.

Chickpea Curry

Canned chickpeas are a game-changer when it comes to whipping up a quick and satisfying curry. Sauté onions, garlic, and ginger in a pan, then add canned chickpeas, diced tomatoes, and a blend of aromatic spices like cumin, coriander, and turmeric. Simmer until the flavours meld together and serve with rice or naan bread for a hearty, budget-friendly vegetarian meal.

Budget Friendly Meals

Chili Con Carne

Canned beans, such as kidney beans and black beans, can be the stars of a delicious chilli con carne. Brown ground beef or turkey in a large pot, then add canned beans, diced tomatoes, chilli powder, cumin, and other spices to taste. Let it simmer before serving with grated cheese and a dollop of sour cream for a hearty Tex-Mex meal, perfect as a budget meal.

Cherry Pie

Canned fruit can be used to create all manner of tasty desserts. A cherry pie is a classic example. Simply pour a tin of cherry pie filling into a pie dish and top with pre-made puff pastry and bake until golden brown. Alternatively, tinned peaches and fresh single cream is an easy win for pudding that requires no baking at all.

Minestrone Soup

Canned vegetables, such as green beans and carrots, can be combined with canned beans and tomatoes to make a hearty minestrone soup. Sauté onions, garlic, and celery, then add the canned ingredients along with vegetable stock, pasta, and Italian herbs for a one-pot meal. Simmer until the pasta is cooked and serve with grated Parmesan cheese. Bellissima!

 Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

Fruity, pretty and surprisingly easy, arrange the pineapple rings in the bottom of a cake pan, add maraschino cherries in the centre of each ring, and pour a simple cake batter over them. Bake until golden brown, then invert the cake for a stunning and delicious pud.

Back-Pocket Pasta

The best thing about tinned goods is that they are often packed with flavour. Sauté canned treats such as artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, anchovies and capers with a little garlic and olive oil. Toss with cooked pasta – use the pasta water as an emollient – top with grated Parmesan cheese and marvel at your culinary prowess.
