Gardener’s Diary December 24: Festive Buzz in the Air

Gardener’s Diary December 24 Feature

In the gardener’s diary for December 24. It’s chilly and sometimes downright dreary, but it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s a festive buzz in the air, but amidst the frenzy, the garden still calls for attention – it’s not time to hang up the gloves yet.

It’s a solid time to plant – from trees to shrubs and the quintessential roses. And if you fancy homegrown fruit, planting now means you’re setting up for a tasty future. Hedging too, whether bare root or container-grown, is good to go in the ground.

On your December to-do list:

Finish off that winter digging. Let the upcoming frosts break down the soil for you.

Prune your fruit trees but dodge the plums and damsons to avoid fungus troubles. If you must cut, seal those wounds up tight.

In your flower beds, you’re still in the clear to add herbaceous beauties and Christmas roses for some winter colour.

Container-grown plants for trees and shrubs can go in now, especially if you’re after some winter vibrancy.

Potted plants need a bit of care to avoid waterlogging – elevate them to keep drainage slick and frost at bay.

The greenhouse should be getting a cleanout. If you’re keeping plants there over winter, consider insulation and keep an eye on the heating.

And let’s not forget the birds – they need a helping hand with food, and Farnborough Garden Centre has the supplies.

Shifting to the festive side of things, we are decking the halls with Christmas trees, holly wreaths, and all manner of scented decorations. We’re keen on the natural look, but there’s a hint of sparkle too for those who like a bit of twinkle.

Looking for a gift that’s a tad more personal? Our collection of ‘Treasured Teddies’ could be just the thing, whether for kids or those who are kids at heart.

So, as the year winds down, consider stopping by Farnborough Garden Centre. We’re hoping to see you before the New Year rings in and wish you the best for the festive season.

Reflecting on the year gone by. It’s been a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new ones at Farnborough Garden Centre. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all our customers. Your continued support and camaraderie have been the brightest blooms in our garden of memories.

I, Pete, along with my team, wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas.

Happy Gardening, Pete.
